Who we work with in North Carolina

Growing businesses across North Carolina.

Health care and social assistance employs about 602,000 people in North Carolina and manufacturing about 461,000, while professional, scientific, and technical services employ about 335,000 in about 58,100 establishments (BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, 2025 annual averages). Across the state, private employers averaged 4.2 million jobs in 2025.

North Carolina rules

The North Carolina rules your finance function runs on.

Four rules set by North Carolina, each with the law that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.

Larger payrolls pay within days.

Once withholding averages $2,000 a month, North Carolina tax follows the federal schedule, due the Friday or Wednesday after each payroll, so the cash leaves soon after payday and is reconciled each run.

Set by Session Law 2023-134; Form NC-30 withholding tables

North Carolina taxes individual income at a flat 3.99% for taxable years after 2025, down from 4.25% for 2025, and further cuts may apply from 2027 if rate reduction triggers are met. Employers withhold using each employee’s Form NC-4 and the NC-30 tables. Average monthly withholding under $250 is paid quarterly, $250 to $2,000 monthly by the 15th, and $2,000 or more on the federal deposit schedule.

Session Law 2023-134; Form NC-30 withholding tables; individual income tax rate for taxable years after 2025.

The cost lands early in the year.

Tax stops once an employee’s wages pass $34,200, so the first quarter carries most of the year’s cost for higher earners, and a budget that spreads it evenly understates January to March.

Set by N.C. General Statutes, Sections 96-9.2 and 96-9.3

Employers pay state unemployment tax on the first $34,200 of each employee’s wages in 2026, up from $32,600 in 2025. Beginning employers pay 1%, and experience-rated employers from 0.06% to 5.76%, based on their reserve ratio and the trust fund’s balance. The quarterly tax and wage report is due April 30, July 31, October 31, and January 31.

N.C. General Statutes, Sections 96-9.2 and 96-9.3; 2026 taxable wage base and tax rates.

Tip records are payroll records.

A $2.13 cash wage only works when tips make up the difference, so certified tips are recorded with each pay run, and the books show any top-up the business has to pay.

Set by North Carolina Wage and Hour Act

The North Carolina minimum wage is $7.25 an hour for employers doing business in the state; agricultural and domestic employees are covered by the federal minimum wage. Employers may count tips toward it, paying tipped employees at least $2.13 an hour, if employees are told in advance, keep all their tips, and certify the tips they receive monthly or each pay period.

Installation is taxable; advice is not listed.

A business that installs or maintains equipment as well as advising charges tax on the first, so invoices separate the two, and tax collected is held for the return due on the 20th.

Set by N.C. General Statutes, Sections 105-164.3 and 105-164.4

North Carolina taxes goods, certain digital property, and specified services, including repair, maintenance, and installation services, service contracts, admissions, laundry and linen services, and accommodation rentals; professional services are not on that list. The state rate is 4.75%, and with county and transit taxes combined rates run from 6.75% to 8.25% in Mecklenburg County. Returns are monthly, due the 20th, or quarterly below $100 a month.

N.C. General Statutes, Sections 105-164.3 and 105-164.4; current combined rates, including Mecklenburg County’s increase from July 1, 2026.

Local rules

Where the rules change across North Carolina.

Your team applies the local rules as well as the North Carolina ones. These are the places where a local tax, a wage rate, or a leave law differs from the rest of the state.

Mecklenburg County

Mecklenburg County added a 1% county sales tax from July 1, 2026, giving it the highest combined rate in North Carolina.

  • The combined general rate is 8.25%: the 4.75% state rate, the 2.00% county rate, the 0.50% transit rate, and the new 1.00% county rate, up from 7.25%.
  • The additional 1% does not apply to items taxed at their own rates, such as qualifying food at 2% and electricity, piped natural gas, and video programming at 7%.
  • Retailers collect the new rate on retail sales and leases sourced to the county, and purchasers owe use tax at the new rate when a retailer does not collect it.

Durham and Orange counties

Durham and Orange counties levy a 0.50% transit tax on top of their county rates, for a combined rate above most of the state.

  • The combined general rate in Durham and Orange counties is 7.5%, including the 0.50% transit rate, while 96 of the state’s 100 counties are at 6.75% or 7%.
  • Wake County also levies the 0.50% transit rate, for a combined 7.25%. These county rates do not include any prepared meal taxes imposed by local jurisdictions.

How it works from anywhere

Can a team outside North Carolina run a North Carolina business?

Yes. Visory’s US leadership team is in New York, and its teams work with businesses across the United States remotely, inside your own accounting file, so nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

Your own file

Mecklenburg’s extra 1% on taxable sales

Since July 1, 2026, taxable sales sourced to Mecklenburg County carry 8.25%, up from 7.25%. On $20,000 a month of taxable repair or installation work, that is $200 more to collect and hold each month. Insights keeps it apart from operating cash.

Unemployment tax, front-loaded

At the 1% beginning rate, each employee costs up to $342 in 2026 on the $34,200 wage base, and for anyone paid more than $136,800 a year, all of it falls in the first quarter. Insights puts that into the cash flow forecast.

When withholding moves to the federal schedule

At the flat 3.99% rate, average withholding of $2,000 a month matches about $50,125 of monthly taxable wages. Past that point, state tax is due days after each payroll rather than monthly, and Insights shows the change in the cash calendar.

What hours does my Visory team work?

Your team works 9am to 5pm Eastern Time on business days, all year round. Outside those hours, the Visory platform is your 24/7 access point, so your financial information is there whenever you need it.

Can a bookkeeper outside my office look after a North Carolina business?

Yes. What matters is that the team knows North Carolina’s rules and works inside your own accounting file. Visory connects to your bank feeds and software, codes and reconciles transactions through the month with Delphi AI working under an expert team, and meets you by video call. Nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

How much does a bookkeeper cost in North Carolina?

Visory charges one flat monthly fee for the scope we agree, with no hourly billing and no timesheets. The fee reflects the services you take, from bookkeeping and payroll to accounts payable, accounts receivable, and Insights, and the volume of work in your business. Do you work in QuickBooks and Xero?

Yes. Visory works inside the systems you already use: QuickBooks and Xero for the ledger, Gusto and Rippling for pay runs, and Bill, Ramp, and Stripe for payments, along with your bank feeds. Your books stay in your own accounting file, which you own and can open at any time. Any change to your setup is agreed with you first.

Do North Carolina businesses charge sales tax on services?

Only on the services North Carolina lists, such as repair, maintenance, and installation services, service contracts, admissions, laundry and linen services, and accommodation rentals. The state rate is 4.75%, and combined rates run from 6.75% to 8.25% in Mecklenburg County from July 1, 2026. This is general information; the Department of Revenue sets the rules for your business.

What is the North Carolina income tax rate in 2026?

North Carolina taxes individual income at a flat 3.99% for taxable years after 2025, down from 4.25% for 2025, and further cuts may apply from 2027 if rate reduction triggers are met. Employers withhold it from each pay run using Form NC-4 and the NC-30 tables. This is general information; the Department of Revenue sets the rules.

How often do North Carolina businesses file sales tax returns?

It depends on the tax owed. A business that consistently owes less than $100 a month files quarterly, by the last day of the month after each quarter; one owing more than $100 but less than $20,000 a month files monthly, by the 20th; and one owing $20,000 or more a month files monthly by the 20th with a prepayment of the next month’s tax, electronically. A business with no sales in a period still files a return showing zero. This is general information; the Department of Revenue sets the rules.

Can you look after staff in more than one state?

Yes. Each state sets its own income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and leave rules. North Carolina withholds from nonresidents’ wages for work done in the state, and from residents’ wages wherever they work unless the other state requires its own withholding. Visory keeps one set of books and runs payroll with each state’s rules applied to the staff who work there.

Do you offer a fractional CFO in North Carolina?

A fractional CFO advises on numbers someone else produces. Visory runs the books, payroll, and payments, then delivers the insight from the same team: Visory Insights is a plain-English monthly report and a session with a named Business Performance Partner. There is no handover between the doing and the advising, and it comes on one flat monthly fee.
