Who we work with in Mississippi

Growing businesses across Mississippi.

Health care and social assistance is Mississippi’s largest private industry, with about 147,000 jobs, and manufacturing employs about 139,000 people, nearly one and a half times its share of jobs nationally (BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, 2025 annual averages). Across the state, private employers averaged about 943,000 jobs in 2025.

Mississippi rules

The Mississippi rules your finance function runs on.

Six rules set by Mississippi, each with the law that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.

Withheld tax is held, not spent.

A quarterly filer can hold three months of employees’ tax before the 15th of the month after the quarter, so the books show it as owed from each payday, not as cash the business can use.

Set by Mississippi Income Tax Withholding Law of 1968; Publication 89-700-25-1, Withholding Income Tax Tables

Employers withhold Mississippi income tax using the tables in Publication 89-700-25-1, effective January 1, 2026: for tax year 2026, the first $10,000 of taxable income is taxed at 0% and the rest at 4.0%. Each employee completes Form 89-350 at hire. The Department of Revenue assigns monthly or quarterly returns, due on the 15th of the following month; generally, average withholding of $300 or more a month means monthly returns.

Mississippi Income Tax Withholding Law of 1968; Publication 89-700-25-1, Withholding Income Tax Tables; withholding tables effective January 1, 2026, for tax year 2026.

The cost lands early in the year.

Contributions stop once an employee’s wages pass $14,000, so for most salaried staff the year’s cost falls in the first months, and a budget that spreads it evenly understates January to March.

Set by Mississippi Employment Security Law, Miss. Code § 71-5-351

Employers pay unemployment contributions on the first $14,000 of wages paid to each employee in a calendar year. A start-up business pays 1.0% in its first year of liability, 1.1% in its second, and 1.2% from its third until it qualifies for a modified rate; modified rates vary from 0.0% to 5.4%. A Workforce Investment and Training contribution may apply on top. Quarterly wage reports and tax are due April 30, July 31, October 31, and January 31.

Mississippi Employment Security Law, Miss. Code § 71-5-351; $14,000 taxable wage base for each calendar year after December 31, 2010.

One federal floor, no state top-up.

Every pay rate is checked against $7.25 and, for tipped staff, the $2.13 cash wage plus tips, so the payroll file records tips each pay period to show the floor was met.

Set by Fair Labor Standards Act (federal); Mississippi has no minimum wage law

Mississippi has no state minimum wage law, so employers subject to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act pay the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour. Tipped employees who receive more than $30 a month in tips may be paid a cash wage of $2.13, with a tip credit of up to $5.12, as long as their tips bring pay to at least $7.25 an hour.

Fair Labor Standards Act (federal); Mississippi has no minimum wage law; federal minimum wage of $7.25 effective July 24, 2009.

Software and web work can carry tax.

A business that builds websites or sells software services charges 7% on top of its fee and holds it for the state until the 20th, so the books show it apart from revenue in every filing period.

Set by Mississippi Code §§ 27-65-17 and 27-65-23 (sales tax)

Mississippi taxes retail sales of goods and a list of services at the general rate of 7%. Taxable services include computer software sales and services, the design and creation of web pages, repairs of tangible personal property, and electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning work. Jackson adds 1% on certain sales and services, and Tupelo 0.25%; there is no county sales tax. Retailers with average liability of $300 or more a month file monthly, others quarterly, by the 20th of the following month.

Mississippi Code §§ 27-65-17 and 27-65-23 (sales tax).

Most service businesses choose their own cycle.

Without a state schedule that applies to them, the pay calendar is a decision, so it is set once in the payroll platform and kept, because staff, withholding returns, and cash flow all plan around it.

Set by Mississippi payday law, as summarized by the US Department of Labor

Mississippi sets a pay frequency only for entities engaged in manufacturing that employ 50 or more employees and employ public labor, and for every public service corporation doing business in the state. Those employers pay wages once every two weeks or twice during each calendar month.

Mississippi payday law, as summarized by the US Department of Labor; US Department of Labor state payday summary, revised January 1, 2023.

Onboarding is part of the first pay run.

The new-hire report and the exemption certificate draw on the same details as the first pay, so both are done the day someone is added to the payroll file.

Set by Mississippi State Directory of New Hires; Mississippi Income Tax Withholding Law of 1968

All employers report basic information about newly hired personnel to the State Directory of New Hires within 15 days, the Mississippi Department of Human Services says. The penalty is $25 for each unreported hire, or up to $500 for collusion between employer and worker. Each new employee also completes Form 89-350, the Mississippi withholding exemption certificate, which sets the withholding from every payment of wages.

Local rules

Where the rules change across Mississippi.

Your team applies the local rules as well as the Mississippi ones. These are the places where a local tax, a wage rate, or a leave law differs from the rest of the state.

Jackson and Tupelo

Two cities add a sales tax of their own on top of the 7% state rate, on sales and services within city limits.

  • Jackson levies an additional 1% infrastructure tax on certain retail sales made and services provided within its corporate limits; Department of Revenue Notice 72-14-2 lists the sales it excludes.
  • Tupelo levies an additional 0.25% on all retail sales made and services provided within its corporate limits. Mississippi has no sales tax at the county level.
  • Many cities and counties also levy tourism and economic development taxes, typically on hotels, motels, restaurants, and bars, which the Department of Revenue lists by place.

How it works from anywhere

Can a team outside Mississippi run a Mississippi business?

Yes. Visory’s US leadership team is in New York, and its teams work with businesses across the United States remotely, inside your own accounting file, so nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

Your own file

Your books stay in your own QuickBooks or Xero file. Your team works inside it, so you see the same numbers they do, whenever you look.

A team you know by name

A dedicated team runs the work, led by a Business Performance Partner. You meet them by video call, and you always know who to ask.

Mississippi rules, built in

Visory runs the finance function for growing businesses across the United States, with its US leadership team in New York. Your books stay in your own QuickBooks or Xero file, and your team works inside it with you. Every pay run and every close is checked against the rules on this page.

Business hours, and the platform after them

Your team works 9am to 5pm Eastern Time on business days, all year round, and the Visory platform is open to you around the clock for documents, approvals, and your numbers.

Visory Insights

What your numbers should show in Mississippi.

Clean books are the start. Every month, Insights turns them into a plain-English report, and a named Business Performance Partner walks your leadership team through what they mean for the year ahead.

Unemployment costs accrue by March

At the 1.0% start-up rate, each employee costs up to $140 in contributions on the $14,000 wage base, before any training contribution, and for anyone paid more than $56,000 a year, all of it falls in the first quarter. Insights puts that into the cash flow forecast.

Quarterly withholding is cash you hold

An employer withholding $250 a month, under the $300 monthly threshold, files quarterly and can carry $750 of employees’ tax until the 15th of the month after the quarter. Insights keeps it apart from operating cash, so the cash you plan from is the business’s own.

Taxable services change the filing calendar

At 7%, $300 of sales tax a month is about $4,286 of taxable software or web design sales. Past that average, returns are generally monthly, due on the 20th. Insights shows when growth moves you onto the monthly calendar and holds the tax apart from revenue.

Common questions

Questions Mississippi businesses ask.

Straight answers about bookkeeping and payroll for a Mississippi business, from a team that works remotely.

Does Visory have an office in Mississippi?

Visory’s US leadership team is in New York, and its teams work with growing businesses across the United States remotely, so we support businesses in Mississippi as we do everywhere else. A Mississippi business gets a dedicated team you know by name, who keep the books and run payroll inside your own QuickBooks or Xero file and meet you by video call. Your records stay in your file, which you can open at any time.

What hours does my Visory team work?

Your team works 9am to 5pm Eastern Time on business days, all year round. Outside those hours, the Visory platform is your 24/7 access point, so your financial information is there whenever you need it.

Can a bookkeeper outside my office look after a Mississippi business?

Yes. What matters is that the team knows Mississippi’s rules and works inside your own accounting file. Visory connects to your bank feeds and software, codes and reconciles transactions through the month with Delphi AI working under an expert team, and meets you by video call. Nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

How much does a bookkeeper cost in Mississippi?

Visory charges one flat monthly fee for the scope we agree, with no hourly billing and no timesheets. The fee reflects the services you take, from bookkeeping and payroll to accounts payable, accounts receivable, and Insights, and the volume of work in your business. After a discovery call, you get a clear proposal, so you know the monthly cost before you start.

See how pricing works

Do you work in QuickBooks and Xero?

Yes. Visory works inside the systems you already use: QuickBooks and Xero for the ledger, Gusto and Rippling for pay runs, and Bill, Ramp, and Stripe for payments, along with your bank feeds. Your books stay in your own accounting file, which you own and can open at any time. Any change to your setup is agreed with you first.

Do Mississippi businesses charge sales tax on services?

Some do. Mississippi taxes a list of services at 7%, including computer software services, web page design, repairs, and electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning work, and Jackson adds 1% on certain sales and services. Returns are due on the 20th of the following month. This is general information; the Department of Revenue sets the rules for your business.

How much Mississippi income tax is withheld in 2026?

The 2026 tables tax the first $10,000 of taxable income at 0% and the rest at 4.0%, based on the exemptions each employee claims on Form 89-350. The Department of Revenue assigns monthly or quarterly returns, due on the 15th of the following month, and your Payroll Specialist prepares them from the same pay runs. This is general information; the Department of Revenue sets the rules.

What do I have to do when I hire someone in Mississippi?

Report the new employee to the State Directory of New Hires within 15 days, and have them complete Form 89-350 so the right income tax is withheld from their first pay. Mississippi has no state minimum wage law, so the federal $7.25 applies. Your Payroll Specialist handles both steps at setup. This is general information; the Department of Human Services and the Department of Revenue set the rules.

Can you look after staff in more than one state?

Yes. Each state sets its own income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and leave rules, and Mississippi requires withholding from residents’ wages for work in another state unless that state requires its own. Visory keeps one set of books and runs payroll with each state’s rules applied to the staff who work there, so every state’s cost shows in one monthly report.

Do you offer a fractional CFO in Mississippi?

A fractional CFO advises on numbers someone else produces. Visory runs the books, payroll, and payments, then delivers the insight from the same team: Visory Insights is a plain-English monthly report and a session with a named Business Performance Partner. There is no handover between the doing and the advising, and it comes on one flat monthly fee.
