Alabama rules
The Alabama rules your finance function runs on.
Six rules set by Alabama, each with the law that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.
Withholding can move to monthly.
A month with more than $1,000 withheld early in a quarter brings a Form A-6 due on the 15th, so a bonus run or a hiring round can pull payments forward, and the quarterly Form A-1 still has to agree with them.
Employers withhold Alabama income tax with the tables or formula in the Department of Revenue’s booklet, at rates of 2%, 4%, and 5%. The 5% rate applies above $3,000 of taxable income for single filers ($6,000 married), and federal withholding is deducted before the tax is figured. Bonuses may be withheld at 5%. Form A-1 is due the last day of the month after each quarter, and Form A-6 by the 15th once more than $1,000 is withheld in a quarter’s first or second month.
Alabama income tax withholding; Withholding Tax Tables and Instructions for Employers (revised January 2026); withholding tables and instructions revised January 2026.The cost lands early in the year.
Tax stops once an employee’s wages pass $8,000, so most of the year’s cost falls in the first quarter, and a budget that spreads it evenly overstates the cost of every quarter after it.
Employers pay unemployment tax on the first $8,000 paid to each employee in a calendar year. Employers newly liable under the Alabama law pay 2.70% until an experience rate is set; experience rates, including the 0.06% Employment Security Enhancement Assessment, run from 0.20% to 6.80% depending on the rate schedule in effect, plus any shared cost. The Quarterly Contribution and Wage Report is filed online by January 31, April 30, July 31, and October 31.

One wage floor across the state.
No city or county can set its own wage or leave rules, so staff anywhere in Alabama share the federal floor, and pay above it is the business’s own decision, set by the market rather than a local ordinance.
Alabama has no state minimum wage law, so the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour applies, and tipped employees may be paid a cash wage of $2.13 under the federal tip credit. The Alabama Uniform Minimum Wage and Right-to-Work Act bars counties and cities from requiring any wage, leave, or other employment benefit that state or federal law does not require, and voids local rules that do.

Goods carry tax; separately billed labor does not.
A business that sells products alongside its services collects tax on the goods, so invoices show labor apart from materials, and the tax collected is held for the state until the 20th of the next month.
Alabama’s 4% state sales tax applies to the gross proceeds of sales of tangible personal property and to the gross receipts of places of amusement or entertainment; labor to repair or install property is exempt when it is billed as a separate item on the invoice. Counties and municipalities may add local sales taxes of 0.10% to 5%. Returns are due monthly by the 20th, and quarterly filing may be requested below $2,400 of tax in the prior year.

The report is due within a week.
Unless reports go electronically twice a month, seven days leaves no room to batch hires, so the report is prepared the day someone is added to the payroll file, and an employee returning after a 60-day gap is reported again.
Employers report each newly hired or recalled employee to Workforce Alabama within seven days of the date of hire or reemployment, with the employee’s name, address, Social Security number, and first day of work, and the employer’s FEIN; employers reporting electronically may instead transmit twice monthly, 12 to 16 days apart. Employers with five or more employees report online. Someone separated for at least 60 consecutive days counts as a new hire, and a missed report may be fined up to $25.
Code of Alabama 1975, Title 25, Chapter 11 (Directory of New Hires). The premium is tracked all year.
The W-2 needs the overtime premium apart from base pay, so each pay run records overtime hours at the base rate and the premium separately, rather than rebuilding the figure in January.
From 2026 through 2028, Alabama taxpayers may deduct the premium portion of their overtime wages on their Alabama return, up to $1,000 a year. Only the amount above the base rate counts: at time and a half on a $10 base rate, $5 of each $15 overtime hour. Total overtime wages are included in Box 16 of Form W-2, and the premium alone is reported in Box 12 with code TT.

What your numbers should show in Alabama.
Clean books are the start. Every month, Insights turns them into a plain-English report, and a named Business Performance Partner walks your leadership team through what they mean for the year ahead.
Unemployment tax is a first-quarter cost
At the 2.70% new-employer rate on the first $8,000 of wages, each employee costs up to $216 a year, and anyone paid more than $32,000 a year reaches the cap within the first quarter. Insights accrues that cost on January to March wages and plans the cash for the first-quarter contribution report, due April 30.
A bonus run can change the payment date
Alabama withholding is paid quarterly until more than $1,000 is withheld in a quarter’s first or second month, then by the 15th of the next month. At the 5% bonus rate, a $25,000 bonus run withholds $1,250 on its own. Insights shows the month the payment moves forward.
Sales tax is held, not earned
Tax collected on goods sits in your account until the 20th of the next month. Quarterly filing is open only below $2,400 of tax for the prior year, which at the 4% state rate is $60,000 of taxable sales. Insights keeps the tax apart from operating cash.

Does Visory have an office in Alabama?
Visory’s US leadership team is in New York, and its teams work with growing businesses across the United States remotely, so we support businesses in Alabama as we do everywhere else. An Alabama business gets a dedicated team you know by name, who keep the books and run payroll inside your own QuickBooks or Xero file and meet you by video call. Your records stay in your file, which you can open at any time.
What hours does my Visory team work?
Your team works 9am to 5pm Eastern Time on business days, all year round. Outside those hours, the Visory platform is your 24/7 access point, so your financial information is there whenever you need it.
Can a bookkeeper outside my office look after an Alabama business?
Yes. What matters is that the team knows Alabama’s rules and works inside your own accounting file. Visory connects to your bank feeds and software, codes and reconciles transactions through the month with Delphi AI working under an expert team, and meets you by video call. Nothing about the work depends on where your office is.
How much does a bookkeeper cost in Alabama?
Visory charges one flat monthly fee for the scope we agree, with no hourly billing and no timesheets. The fee reflects the services you take, from bookkeeping and payroll to accounts payable, accounts receivable, and Insights, and the volume of work in your business. After a discovery call, you get a clear proposal, so you know the monthly cost before you start.
See how pricing works Do you work in QuickBooks and Xero?
Yes. Visory works inside the systems you already use: QuickBooks and Xero for the ledger, Gusto and Rippling for pay runs, and Bill, Ramp, and Stripe for payments, along with your bank feeds. Your books stay in your own accounting file, which you own and can open at any time. Any change to your setup is agreed with you first.
Do Alabama businesses charge sales tax on services?
Alabama’s 4% state sales tax applies to sales of tangible personal property and to places of amusement or entertainment, and labor to repair or install property is exempt when it is billed separately. A business that sells goods with its services collects tax on the goods, plus county and city taxes of 0.10% to 5%. This is general information; the Alabama Department of Revenue sets the rules.
How soon do I report a new hire in Alabama?
Within seven days of the date of hire or reemployment, to Workforce Alabama, with the employee’s name, address, Social Security number, and first day of work. Employers with five or more employees report online, and someone returning after at least 60 consecutive days away counts as a new hire. Your Payroll Specialist prepares it when the employee is set up. This is general information; Workforce Alabama sets the rules.
What unemployment tax does a new Alabama employer pay?
Employers newly liable under Alabama’s unemployment law pay 2.70% on the first $8,000 of each employee’s wages in the calendar year, up to $216 per employee, until an experience rate is assigned. The Quarterly Contribution and Wage Report is filed online by the last day of the month after each quarter. This is general information; the Alabama Department of Workforce sets the rules.
Can you look after staff in more than one state?
Yes. Each state sets its own income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and leave rules, and Alabama exempts the Alabama earnings of out-of-state workers who work there for 30 or fewer days in a calendar year. Visory keeps one set of books and runs payroll with each state’s rules applied to the staff who work there, so every state’s cost shows in one monthly report.
Do you offer a fractional CFO in Alabama?
A fractional CFO advises on numbers someone else produces. Visory runs the books, payroll, and payments, then delivers the insight from the same team: Visory Insights is a plain-English monthly report and a session with a named Business Performance Partner. There is no handover between the doing and the advising, and it comes on one flat monthly fee.
