Who we work with in Alaska

Growing businesses across Alaska.

Health care and social assistance employs about 51,000 people in Alaska, and mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction employs about 13,100 at average annual pay of $169,976, nearly 11 times its share of jobs nationally (BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, 2025 annual averages). Across the state, private employers averaged about 258,000 jobs in 2025.

Alaska rules

The Alaska rules your finance function runs on.

Seven rules set by Alaska, each with the law that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.

No state withholding to run.

The state line on an Alaska pay stub is the employee’s unemployment contribution, not income tax, so a staff member who moves from another state sees that withholding stop, and the books carry federal withholding alone.

Set by Alaska individual income tax, repealed in 1980; AS 43.20.011 (corporate income tax)

Alaska repealed its individual income tax in 1980, so employers withhold no state income tax from wages, and pay runs carry federal income tax withholding only. The state’s corporate income tax, AS 43.20.011, applies only to entities taxed as corporations: sole proprietorships and partnerships report their income on their owners’ individual returns and pay no Alaska income tax. Employees do contribute to unemployment insurance through payroll.

Two contributions, one cap.

The employer’s share and the employee’s withholding both stop at $54,200 of wages, so payroll tracks each employee’s wages for the year and stops both together, and the quarterly report agrees with every pay run.

Set by AS 23.20 (Alaska employment security tax)

In 2026, unemployment contributions are paid on the first $54,200 of each employee’s wages, up from $51,700 in 2025. Experienced employers pay 1.00% to 5.40%, and new employers pay their industry rate, 1.00% for every industry in 2026. Employees also contribute 0.50%, up to $271 for the year, withheld by the employer. The quarterly contribution report and payment are due April 30, July 31, October 31, and January 31.

AS 23.20 (Alaska employment security tax); 2026 wage base and rates, January 1 to December 31, 2026.

Two pay floors step up next July.

Hourly rates and the salary that keeps a manager exempt from overtime both rise on July 1, 2027, so the payroll file takes the new rates from that date and salaried staff near the line are reviewed before it. From 2028 the change comes each January.

Set by AS 23.10.065, as amended by Ballot Measure 1 (2024)

Alaska’s minimum wage is $14.00 an hour from July 1, 2026, rising to $15.00 on July 1, 2027; from 2028 it is adjusted for inflation each January 1. Employers may not count tips toward the minimum wage. Salaried staff are exempt from overtime only if paid at least twice the minimum wage for a 40-hour week: $1,120 a week ($58,240 a year) from July 1, 2026, and $1,200 a week ($62,400) from July 1, 2027.

AS 23.10.065, as amended by Ballot Measure 1 (2024); $14.00 an hour from July 1, 2026.

The rate depends on the community.

Each borough and city sets its own tax base and rate, so a business serving customers in several communities checks each one’s rules and registers where its services are taxed.

Set by AS 29.45.650 and AS 29.45.700 (municipal sales and use taxes)

Alaska has no statewide sales tax; sales taxes are levied by boroughs and cities. A borough may levy a sales tax on sales, rents, and services provided in the borough, and a city may levy its own in the manner provided for boroughs, so services can be taxable depending on the community: the City and Borough of Juneau taxes all services at 5%.

AS 29.45.650 and AS 29.45.700 (municipal sales and use taxes).

The balance belongs on every pay stub.

Leave used this year and the balance appear on each statement of earnings, so accrual runs inside payroll, and passing 15 full-time equivalents in one year lifts the cap for everyone in the next.

Set by AS 23.10.066 to 23.10.069 (Ballot Measure 1, 2024)

Employees accrue at least one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Employers with 15 or more employees allow up to 56 hours a year to be accrued and used, and those with fewer than 15 up to 40 hours, with size counted in full-time equivalents for the previous calendar year. Unused leave carries over, a rehire within six months has the balance reinstated, and pay statements show leave used and the balance.

AS 23.10.066 to 23.10.069 (Ballot Measure 1, 2024); paid sick leave from July 1, 2025.

A dismissal starts a three-day clock.

Final pay cannot wait for the next scheduled run when the employer ends the job, so an off-cycle payment is prepared as soon as the termination is entered in the payroll file.

Set by AS 23.05.140

Employers set monthly or semi-monthly pay periods, at the employee’s election, unless an annual initial contract of employment agrees to monthly pay. When the employer ends the employment, for any reason, final pay is due within three working days. When the employee quits, it is due on the next regular payday that is at least three days after the employer received notice. Late final pay can bring a penalty of up to 90 working days’ wages.

AS 23.05.140.

Part-time and returning staff count.

Every W-2 employee is reported, including rehires, and each new hire gets their pay rate and payday in writing, so both are prepared when someone is added or reactivated in the payroll file.

Set by Alaska new hire reporting (Child Support Enforcement Division); AS 23.05.160

Employers report each new or rehired employee to the Child Support Enforcement Division within 20 days of the date of hire or rehire, with details found on the W-2 form such as the employee’s name, address, and Social Security number. Anyone who receives a W-2, full time or part time, is reported, and reports can be made online through the division’s Business Portal. At hiring, the employer also tells each employee in writing the day and place of payment and the rate of pay.

Local rules

Where the rules change across Alaska.

Your team applies the local rules as well as the Alaska ones. These are the places where a local tax, a wage rate, or a leave law differs from the rest of the state.

Juneau

The City and Borough of Juneau taxes sales of goods and services at 5%, so a services business there collects local sales tax.

  • All merchants collect sales tax at 5% on sales of all goods, all services, and all nonresidential rentals, and register with the sales tax administrator before making sales or rendering services in the borough.
  • Monthly, quarterly, and annual returns are due on the last day of the month after the reporting period, and a return is required for every period, even one with no sales.
  • A merchant who collects more than $1,000 of sales tax in a month deposits the estimated tax by the 15th of the next month, in addition to the quarterly return.

How it works from anywhere

Can a team outside Alaska run an Alaska business?

Yes. Visory’s US leadership team is in New York, and its teams work with businesses across the United States remotely, inside your own accounting file, so nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

Your own file

Your books stay in your own QuickBooks or Xero file. Your team works inside it, so you see the same numbers they do, whenever you look.

A team you know by name

A dedicated team runs the work, led by a Business Performance Partner. You meet them by video call, and you always know who to ask.

Alaska rules, built in

Visory runs the finance function for growing businesses across the United States, with its US leadership team in New York. Your books stay in your own QuickBooks or Xero file, and your team works inside it with you. Every pay run and every close is checked against the rules on this page.

Business hours, and the platform after them

Your team works 9am to 5pm Eastern Time on business days, all year round, and the Visory platform is open to you around the clock for documents, approvals, and your numbers.

Visory Insights

What your numbers should show in Alaska.

Clean books are the start. Every month, Insights turns them into a plain-English report, and a named Business Performance Partner walks your leadership team through what they mean for the year ahead.

Unemployment contributions run into the summer

With a $54,200 wage base, a new employer at 1.00% pays up to $542 a year per employee and withholds up to $271 from that employee at 0.50%. For anyone paid $108,400 a year, both stop at the end of June. Insights puts each month’s cost where it falls.

The overtime salary line moves twice

Salaried staff are exempt from overtime only at twice the minimum wage for a 40-hour week: $58,240 a year from July 1, 2026, and $62,400 from July 1, 2027. A manager on $60,000 needs $2,400 more by then, or overtime. Insights builds both steps into the forecast.

Sick leave builds up with every shift

At one hour for every 30 worked, a full-time employee reaches the 56-hour cap after 1,680 hours, about 42 weeks of 40 hours, and the 40-hour cap after 1,200 hours. Unused leave carries over, so Insights shows the leave your team has earned as part of next year’s cost.

Common questions

Questions Alaska businesses ask.

Straight answers about bookkeeping and payroll for an Alaska business, from a team that works remotely.

Does Visory have an office in Alaska?

Visory’s US leadership team is in New York, and its teams work with growing businesses across the United States remotely, so we support businesses in Alaska as we do everywhere else. An Alaska business gets a dedicated team you know by name, who keep the books and run payroll inside your own QuickBooks or Xero file and meet you by video call. Your records stay in your file, which you can open at any time.

What hours does my Visory team work?

Your team works 9am to 5pm Eastern Time on business days, all year round. Outside those hours, the Visory platform is your 24/7 access point, so your financial information is there whenever you need it.

Can a bookkeeper outside my office look after an Alaska business?

Yes. What matters is that the team knows Alaska’s rules and works inside your own accounting file. Visory connects to your bank feeds and software, codes and reconciles transactions through the month with Delphi AI working under an expert team, and meets you by video call. Nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

How much does a bookkeeper cost in Alaska?

Visory charges one flat monthly fee for the scope we agree, with no hourly billing and no timesheets. The fee reflects the services you take, from bookkeeping and payroll to accounts payable, accounts receivable, and Insights, and the volume of work in your business. After a discovery call, you get a clear proposal, so you know the monthly cost before you start.

See how pricing works

Do you work in QuickBooks and Xero?

Yes. Visory works inside the systems you already use: QuickBooks and Xero for the ledger, Gusto and Rippling for pay runs, and Bill, Ramp, and Stripe for payments, along with your bank feeds. Your books stay in your own accounting file, which you own and can open at any time. Any change to your setup is agreed with you first.

Do Alaska employers withhold state income tax?

No. Alaska repealed its individual income tax in 1980, so pay runs carry federal withholding only. Employees still contribute 0.50% of wages to unemployment insurance, up to $271 in 2026, which the employer withholds and reports each quarter with its own contribution. This is general information; the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development sets the unemployment insurance rules.

Do Alaska businesses charge sales tax on services?

It depends on the community. Alaska’s sales taxes are levied by boroughs and cities, which may tax sales, rents, and services and set their own rates and exemptions. Juneau, for example, taxes all services at 5%. So the answer turns on where your customers are and where the work is done. This is general information; each borough or city sets its own rules.

How much paid sick leave do Alaska employees get?

Employees earn at least one hour for every 30 hours worked: up to 40 hours a year with fewer than 15 employees, and up to 56 hours with 15 or more, counted in full-time equivalents. Unused leave carries over, and each pay statement shows leave used and the balance. This is general information; the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development sets the rules.

Can you look after staff in more than one state?

Yes. Each state sets its own income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and leave rules, and Alaska has no individual income tax, so staff working there have no state income tax withheld. Visory keeps one set of books and runs payroll with each state’s rules applied to the staff who work there, so every state’s cost shows in one monthly report.

Do you offer a fractional CFO in Alaska?

A fractional CFO advises on numbers someone else produces. Visory runs the books, payroll, and payments, then delivers the insight from the same team: Visory Insights is a plain-English monthly report and a session with a named Business Performance Partner. There is no handover between the doing and the advising, and it comes on one flat monthly fee.
