Who we work with in New Jersey

Growing businesses across New Jersey.

Health care and social assistance is New Jersey’s largest private industry, with about 686,000 jobs, and professional, scientific, and technical services employ about 338,000 people in about 40,500 establishments (BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, 2025 annual averages). Across the state, private employers averaged 3.7 million jobs in 2025.

New Jersey rules

The New Jersey rules your finance function runs on.

Eight rules set by New Jersey, each with the law that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.

Payment follows the payroll calendar.

Once a month’s withholding passes $500, it is due by the 15th of the next month, and the third month goes with the quarterly Form NJ-927, so payroll and the books are reconciled every month, not each quarter.

Set by New Jersey Gross Income Tax; Form NJ-WT (September 2025)

Employers withhold New Jersey Gross Income Tax from wages using the rate tables in Form NJ-WT and each employee’s Form NJ-W4. The income tax rates themselves rise from 1.4% to 10.75% on taxable income over $1 million. An employer that withheld more than $500 in the first or second month of a quarter pays by the 15th of the next month, and one with $10,000 or more withheld in the prior year pays by the Wednesday after each pay week.

New Jersey Gross Income Tax; Form NJ-WT (September 2025); rate schedules for 2020 and after; Form NJ-WT revised September 2025.

Both sides of the payroll pay in.

Each pay run deducts the employee’s share and accrues the employer’s until wages pass $44,800, so the cost is heaviest early in the year, and both shares have to agree with the quarterly NJ-927.

Set by New Jersey Unemployment Compensation Law, R.S. 43:21

In 2026, employer and worker unemployment contributions apply to the first $44,800 of each employee’s wages, rising to $46,400 in 2027. New employers pay 2.6825% for unemployment insurance and 0.1175% for the workforce funds, 2.8% in all, plus 0.5% for disability insurance, and employees contribute 0.425%. Form NJ-927 and the WR-30 wage report are due April 30, July 30, October 30, and January 30.

New Jersey Unemployment Compensation Law, R.S. 43:21; 2026 wage base from January 1, 2026; new employer rates for July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.

The rate resets every January.

New Jersey adjusts its minimum wage each year with the Consumer Price Index, so pay rates near the floor are reviewed before the first pay run of each year, and headcount decides which rate applies.

Set by New Jersey Constitution, Article I, Paragraph 23; N.J.A.C. 12:56-3.1(c)

The minimum wage is $15.92 an hour for most employees in 2026, and $15.23 for employees of seasonal and small employers with fewer than six employees. Tipped workers are paid a cash wage of at least $6.05, with a maximum tip credit of $9.87. On January 1, 2027, the rates rise to $16.48, $16.25 for seasonal and small employers, and $6.61 for tipped workers.

New Jersey Constitution, Article I, Paragraph 23; N.J.A.C. 12:56-3.1(c); 2026 rates from January 1, 2026; 2027 rates from January 1, 2027.

The service decides the tax, not the industry.

A studio’s photography and printing can be taxable while its website design is not, so each invoice line is coded to the right treatment, and tax collected is held until the ST-50 is due on the 20th after each quarter.

Set by New Jersey Sales and Use Tax Act, N.J.S.A. 54:32B

New Jersey charges a single statewide Sales Tax rate of 6.625% on most goods and certain services. Professional, advertising, architectural, bookkeeping, and website design services are exempt, while information services, investigation and security guard services, telephone answering, photography, printing, janitorial cleaning, and landscaping are taxable. Every seller files Form ST-50 quarterly; one that collected more than $30,000 in the prior year also pays monthly for any month it collects more than $500.

New Jersey Sales and Use Tax Act, N.J.S.A. 54:32B; statewide rate of 6.625% from January 1, 2018.

Accrual follows hours, not weeks.

A part-time employee earns leave at the same one-in-30 rate as a full-time one, so the payroll file tracks hours worked against the employer’s benefit year and stops carryover at the 40-hour cap.

Set by New Jersey Earned Sick Leave Law, N.J.S.A. 34:11D

Employers of all sizes give full-time, part-time, and temporary employees one hour of earned sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours in a benefit year, the 12 months the employer sets, or may advance all 40 hours at its start. New employees can use leave from their 120th calendar day, and no more than 40 hours need be used or carried forward in a benefit year.

Paydays are set in advance.

Wages run on regular paydays the employer designates ahead of time, and a leaver’s final pay can wait for the next one, so terminations are processed inside the normal pay cycle rather than as one-off payments.

Set by New Jersey Wage Payment Law

Most employers pay wages at least twice each calendar month, on regular paydays set in advance. Executive, supervisory, and certain other special classes of employees may be paid once a month on a regular schedule. When employment ends, whether the employee quits or is fired, the employer may pay final wages on the next regular payday for that pay period.

New Jersey Wage Payment Law.

Onboarding is part of the pay run.

The new-hire report draws on the same details as the first pay, so it is filed the day someone is added to the payroll file or a contractor is engaged, well inside the 20 days.

Set by Federal and New Jersey new hire reporting laws

Employers report each newly hired or rehired employee in New Jersey within 20 days of the hire or rehire date, through the New Jersey Child Support Employer Services Portal, which also takes reports of terminated employees. New Jersey is one of the states that also requires independent contractors to be reported, so a business that engages contractors reports them as well.

Deductions stop at two different points.

Unemployment and workforce deductions end at $44,800 of wages and disability and family leave at $171,100, so a higher earner’s net pay rises twice in the year, and each total has to agree with the NJ-927.

Set by New Jersey Temporary Disability Benefits Law, with Family Leave Insurance

In 2026, employees contribute 0.19% of wages to Temporary Disability Insurance and 0.23% to Family Leave Insurance, on the first $171,100 of wages, and employers pay disability contributions on the first $44,800, at 0.5% for new employers. Disability benefits are 85% of the average weekly wage, up to $1,119 a week in 2026. Employers are covered by the State Plan unless workers are under an approved private plan.

Local rules

Where the rules change across New Jersey.

Your team applies the local rules as well as the New Jersey ones. These are the places where a local tax, a wage rate, or a leave law differs from the rest of the state.

Newark

Newark adds a payroll tax of its own, filed quarterly by employers, on wages for work done in the city.

  • Newark’s payroll tax is 1% of wages for services performed in the city, including work supervised from Newark and the wages of employees who primarily report to a Newark location.
  • Employers whose workforce is more than half Newark residents may qualify for a reduced rate of 0.50% with proof of residency, and returns are filed quarterly, due the 30th day after each quarter ends.

Each employee’s deductions, capped twice

In 2026 an employee’s unemployment and workforce deductions stop at $190.40, 0.425% of $44,800, and disability and family leave deductions at $718.62, 0.42% of $171,100. Insights shows when each stops, so a change in net pay is expected rather than queried.

The 2027 wage base adds to every hire

At today’s new employer rates, 2.8% plus 0.5% for disability, each employee costs $1,478.40 on the 2026 base of $44,800. The base rises to $46,400 in 2027, adding $52.80 per employee. Insights builds both years into the budget.

A 56-cent raise is $1,164.80

The minimum wage rises from $15.92 to $16.48 on January 1, 2027. For a full-time employee working 2,080 hours a year, that is $1,164.80 more in pay, before the payroll contributions on it. Insights puts the increase into the forecast now.

Do you work in QuickBooks and Xero?

Yes. Visory works inside the systems you already use: QuickBooks and Xero for the ledger, Gusto and Rippling for pay runs, and Bill, Ramp, and Stripe for payments, along with your bank feeds. Your books stay in your own accounting file, which you own and can open at any time. Any change to your setup is agreed with you first.

Do New Jersey businesses charge sales tax on services?

Only on services New Jersey taxes. Professional, advertising, architectural, bookkeeping, and website design services are exempt, but information services, investigation and security guard services, photography, printing, janitorial cleaning, and landscaping are taxable at the single statewide rate of 6.625%. This is general information; the Division of Taxation sets the rules for your business.

In 2026, employees contribute 0.19% of wages to Temporary Disability Insurance and 0.23% to Family Leave Insurance on the first $171,100 of wages, plus 0.425% toward unemployment and the workforce funds on the first $44,800. Your Payroll Specialist stops each deduction at its cap and reports them on the quarterly NJ-927. This is general information; the Department of Labor sets the rules.

How much earned sick leave do New Jersey employees get?

Employers of every size give one hour of earned sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours in the benefit year the employer sets, or advance all 40 hours at its start. New employees can use their leave from their 120th calendar day. This is general information; the Department of Labor and Workforce Development sets the rules.

Can you look after staff in more than one state?

Yes. Each state sets its own income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and leave rules, and New Jersey and Pennsylvania have a reciprocal agreement: a Pennsylvania resident working in New Jersey who files Form NJ-165 has tax withheld for their home state. Visory keeps one set of books and runs payroll with each state’s rules applied to the staff who work there.

Do you offer a fractional CFO in New Jersey?

A fractional CFO advises on numbers someone else produces. Visory runs the books, payroll, and payments, then delivers the insight from the same team: Visory Insights is a plain-English monthly report and a session with a named Business Performance Partner.
