Who we work with in Iowa

Growing businesses across Iowa.

Manufacturing is Iowa’s largest private industry, with about 216,000 jobs, ahead of health care and social assistance at about 196,000, and insurance carriers and related activities employ about 47,000 people, 1.8 times the industry’s share of jobs nationally (BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, 2025 annual averages). Across the state, private employers averaged 1.31 million jobs in 2025.

Iowa rules

The Iowa rules your finance function runs on.

Six rules set by Iowa, each with the law that sets it and what it does to your month. Your team works to them every pay run and every close.

The deposit calendar follows the total.

A growing payroll that passes $6,000 of withholding a year moves from quarterly to monthly payments, and past $120,000 to two a month, so the books record each payment against the pay runs it covers.

Set by Iowa Code section 422.16; Iowa Withholding Formula (November 2025)

Employers withhold Iowa income tax at a flat 3.80% after an annual deduction of $13,000 ($19,500 for heads of household, $26,000 for joint filers whose spouse has no earned income), less IA W-4 allowances. Supplemental wages such as bonuses are withheld at 3.8% when federal tax is withheld at a flat rate. Employers remitting under $6,000 a year file quarterly, $6,000 to $120,000 monthly by the 15th, and above $120,000 semimonthly.

Iowa Code section 422.16; Iowa Withholding Formula (November 2025); withholding formula for taxable wages paid beginning January 1, 2026.

The 2026 base is half of 2025’s.

Contributions now stop once an employee earns $20,400, so for salaried staff the cost lands early in the year, and a budget built on 2025 figures overstates it.

Set by Iowa Code chapter 96; Iowa Administrative Code rule 871-23.8

Employers pay unemployment insurance contributions on the first $20,400 of each employee’s wages in 2026, down from $39,500 in 2025. Table D, the lowest allowed by law, is in effect for 2026, with rates from 0.000% to 5.400%; new employers pay 1.000%, and new construction employers 5.400%. Quarterly contribution and payroll reports are due on the last day of the month after each quarter.

Iowa Code chapter 96; Iowa Administrative Code rule 871-23.8; taxable wage base and rate Table D for 2026.

Tipped pay is checked week by week.

For staff paid the $4.35 cash wage, the payroll file compares wages plus tips with $7.25 for each workweek, and any shortfall is paid in that pay run, not at year end.

Set by Iowa Code section 91D.1

The Iowa minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, the same as the federal rate. Employees who customarily receive more than $30 a month in tips may be paid as little as $4.35 an hour, but if wages and tips do not average at least $7.25 an hour in a workweek, the employer pays the difference. Most small retail and service businesses grossing under $300,000 a year are not covered by the Iowa law.

Iowa Code section 91D.1; $7.25 an hour as of January 1, 2008.

The local 1% depends on the address.

Some cities in a county have the local option tax and some do not, so each sale is coded to the right jurisdiction, and the tax collected is held for the monthly return.

Set by Iowa Code section 423.2

Iowa taxes services only when Iowa law lists them, and the list includes investment counseling, employment and executive search agencies, information services, photography, interior decorating, and security and detective services. The state rate is 6%, and most cities and counties add a 1% local option sales tax. A taxable service sold to most nonprofits is still taxable. Sellers collecting under $1,200 a year file annually; others file monthly, by the last day of the following month.

Iowa Code section 423.2.

The 12-day rule sets the cutoff.

A biweekly period ending on a Friday has to be paid within 12 days, Sundays and holidays aside, so timesheets, approvals, and expense claims run to a fixed timetable every cycle.

Set by Iowa Code sections 91A.3 and 91A.4

Employers pay wages at least monthly, semimonthly, or biweekly, on regular paydays at consistent intervals designated in advance. A regular payday may be no more than 12 days, excluding Sundays and legal holidays, after the end of the period in which the wages were earned. When employment ends, all wages earned are due no later than the next regular payday for that pay period. Authorized expenses are reimbursed within 30 days of a claim.

Iowa Code sections 91A.3 and 91A.4.

Fifteen days is a short window.

A report for a new hire is due within 15 days of the hire, so it is filed the day someone is added to the payroll file, from the same details as their first pay run.

Set by Iowa Code section 252G.3

Employers report each new or rehired employee to the Iowa Centralized Employee Registry within 15 days of the hire, or in electronic transmissions 12 to 16 days apart. The report gives the employer’s name, address, and federal identification number, the employee’s name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth, and whether dependent health care coverage is available and from when.

Iowa Code section 252G.3; reporting required for hires and rehires since January 1, 1994.

How it works from anywhere

Can a team outside Iowa run an Iowa business?

Yes. Visory’s US leadership team is in New York, and its teams work with businesses across the United States remotely, inside your own accounting file, so nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

Your own file

Your books stay in your own QuickBooks or Xero file. Your team works inside it, so you see the same numbers they do, whenever you look.

A team you know by name

A dedicated team runs the work, led by a Business Performance Partner. You meet them by video call, and you always know who to ask.

Iowa rules, built in

Visory runs the finance function for growing businesses across the United States, with its US leadership team in New York. Your books stay in your own QuickBooks or Xero file, and your team works inside it with you. Every pay run and every close is checked against the rules on this page.

Business hours, and the platform after them

Your team works 9am to 5pm Eastern Time on business days, all year round, and the Visory platform is open to you around the clock for documents, approvals, and your numbers.

Visory Insights

What your numbers should show in Iowa.

Clean books are the start. Every month, Insights turns them into a plain-English report, and a named Business Performance Partner walks your leadership team through what they mean for the year ahead.

Unemployment costs fell by half for 2026

At the 1.0% new-employer rate, the most an employee costs in contributions drops from $395 on the 2025 base of $39,500 to $204 on the 2026 base of $20,400. Insights shows the saving by quarter, so the cash flow forecast does not carry last year’s cost.

When withholding moves to monthly deposits

At 3.8%, $6,000 of Iowa withholding a year is the tax on about $158,000 of wages after each employee’s deduction. Insights shows the year your hiring plan crosses that line, so payments by the 15th of the following month are in the cash calendar before the first one is due.

Sales tax is held, not earned

Where the local option applies, Iowa sales tax is 7% of taxable sales: $700 on every $10,000 of taxable services, held until the monthly return is due at the end of the following month. Insights keeps it apart from operating cash, so the cash you plan from is your own.

Common questions

Questions Iowa businesses ask.

Straight answers about bookkeeping and payroll for an Iowa business, from a team that works remotely.

Does Visory have an office in Iowa?

Visory’s US leadership team is in New York, and its teams work with growing businesses across the United States remotely, so we support businesses in Iowa as we do everywhere else. An Iowa business gets a dedicated team you know by name, who keep the books and run payroll inside your own QuickBooks or Xero file and meet you by video call. Your records stay in your file, which you can open at any time.

What hours does my Visory team work?

Your team works 9am to 5pm Eastern Time on business days, all year round. Outside those hours, the Visory platform is your 24/7 access point, so your financial information is there whenever you need it.

Can a bookkeeper outside my office look after an Iowa business?

Yes. What matters is that the team knows Iowa’s rules and works inside your own accounting file. Visory connects to your bank feeds and software, codes and reconciles transactions through the month with Delphi AI working under an expert team, and meets you by video call. Nothing about the work depends on where your office is.

How much does a bookkeeper cost in Iowa?

Visory charges one flat monthly fee for the scope we agree, with no hourly billing and no timesheets. The fee reflects the services you take, from bookkeeping and payroll to accounts payable, accounts receivable, and Insights, and the volume of work in your business. After a discovery call, you get a clear proposal, so you know the monthly cost before you start.

See how pricing works

Do you work in QuickBooks and Xero?

Yes. Visory works inside the systems you already use: QuickBooks and Xero for the ledger, Gusto and Rippling for pay runs, and Bill, Ramp, and Stripe for payments, along with your bank feeds. Your books stay in your own accounting file, which you own and can open at any time. Any change to your setup is agreed with you first.

Do Iowa businesses charge sales tax on services?

Only on services Iowa law lists, but the list is long. It includes investment counseling, employment and executive search, information services, photography, and interior decorating. The state rate is 6%, and most cities and counties add 1%. This is general information; the Iowa Department of Revenue sets the rules for your business.

What is the Iowa unemployment insurance wage base in 2026?

Contributions are paid on the first $20,400 of each employee’s wages in 2026, down from $39,500 in 2025. Rates run from 0% to 5.4%, new employers pay 1.0%, and reports are due the last day of the month after each quarter. This is general information; Iowa Workforce Development sets the rules.

How often do I have to pay employees in Iowa?

At least monthly, semimonthly, or biweekly, on regular paydays set in advance, and no more than 12 days after the pay period ends, not counting Sundays and legal holidays. Anyone who leaves is paid by the next regular payday. This is general information; the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing sets the rules.

Can you look after staff in more than one state?

Yes. Each state sets its own income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and leave rules, and Iowa and Illinois have a reciprocal agreement, so Illinois residents working in Iowa have Illinois tax withheld instead. Visory keeps one set of books and runs payroll with each state’s rules applied to the staff who work there, so every state’s cost shows in one monthly report.

Do you offer a fractional CFO in Iowa?

A fractional CFO advises on numbers someone else produces. Visory runs the books, payroll, and payments, then delivers the insight from the same team: Visory Insights is a plain-English monthly report and a session with a named Business Performance Partner. There is no handover between the doing and the advising, and it comes on one flat monthly fee.
